NEON MURALS

The mural outline is made from sections of neon glass shaped to match the design. The illuminated line is part of the physical construction, so the tube bend radii, connections and ends must be accounted for in the production drawing.

A mural can combine lettering, illustration and abstract lines. Across a large surface, the empty space around the design, the divisions of the façade and its relationship to windows and entrances matter as much as the sign itself.

After dark, the illuminated outline draws attention. In daylight, the tubes, supports, cables and background remain visible, so the design should also address the installation’s appearance with the power switched off.

Artwork viewed from across a street requires a different scale from a mural in a hotel lobby. Before setting dimensions, identify the main viewing points, their distance and the angle from which the wall is seen.

An overly dense drawing can make the form difficult to read from a distance. Simplifying small elements and leaving suitable gaps between lines helps preserve a recognisable outline and the hierarchy of the composition.

The same neon colour can look different on light plaster, dark cladding and a reflective surface. It is worth choosing the colour with the actual wall material and existing ambient lighting in mind.

A large illuminated composition can become a recognisable feature of a building and a landmark after dark. Its position should follow the architecture and the directions from which people approach, rather than simply the available surface area.

In a reception area, restaurant or shared space, a mural can connect the identity of the place with its interior design. At shorter viewing distances, glass details, the appearance of fixings and the relationship between light and interior materials become more important.

It is worth taking into account nearby windows, resting areas and other light sources. An exterior project also requires checking the regulations applicable to the specific location and agreeing on the scope of installation with the property owner or manager.

The fixing method depends on the wall material, artwork dimensions and display conditions. Coordinate the division of the mural into sections with transport, installation sequence and the possibility of replacing individual elements.

Agree the positions of power supply components and cable routes before making the installation. Leaving these decisions until the end can turn technical connections into accidental, visible parts of the drawing.

On a high façade, plan how to reach the glass, fixings and power supply components. Indoor and outdoor solutions must suit the conditions of the particular location; agree the scope of maintenance before production.
