RETRO AND HERITAGE NEON SIGNS
Retro neon signs use hand-shaped glass and a line of light to give a place its character. Their impact comes from the letterforms, sign proportions, colour of the light and the way they are mounted on the façade. They can evoke historic signs or develop their visual language in a new design.
For signage connected with a place’s heritage, the starting point is the existing object and its documentation. A new installation inspired by historic aesthetics, a recreation of an old sign and the repair of a surviving neon sign each require different decisions. It is worth defining the scope of work before choosing materials and starting production.
At PRETENDE, we create custom glass neon signs, adapting the lettering, structure and display method to the architecture. The photos of Hotel Katowice show how the illuminated sign relates to the façade and highlight the importance of details viewed up close. Below, we explain what to consider when designing a retro neon sign or working on existing signage.
