A multi-sided pylon is designed for spaces where a single viewing direction is not enough. People may approach from the road, enter from the car park, cross a plaza, walk around a building or move between several areas of a site.

Its purpose is to make information legible from different viewing angles. A well-designed multi-sided totem not only increases visibility, but also helps the sign work in harmony with its surroundings.

A sign can be double-sided, three-sided or multi-sided, depending on the layout of the site and the directions in which people move. A structure positioned by a road works differently from a monolith at the corner of a plot, or a freestanding 360° sign at the centre of a square, car park or building complex.

Each side of the structure should have a defined purpose: identifying the brand, directing people to the entrance, displaying tenants, marking an area or providing directional information. A multi-sided design only makes sense when it reflects the actual space.

A multi-sided totem sign is worth using when a property is visible from several sides, has more than one approach route, multiple entrances, an extensive car park, a corner location or user traffic coming from different directions.

This solution works well for retail parks, hotels, office buildings, clinics, service facilities, campuses, housing estates, entrance plazas, internal roundabouts and multi-building sites.

Multi-sided pylons, double-sided totems, three-sided monoliths and freestanding 360° signs can be made from aluminium, steel, technical composites, painted panels, illuminated sign boxes, information modules, dimensional letters, illuminated sections and milled components.

The choice of technology depends on the number of sides, the size of the structure, how the information is displayed, illumination, outdoor conditions, the supporting structure, foundation and the desired visual standard of the installation.

Multi-sided pylons are designed around the actual viewing directions of users. It matters where a car is approaching from, where a pedestrian is walking, from which side the façade is visible and where the user makes a decision.

A multi-sided freestanding sign should not be designed solely as a structure. You need to plan which side serves which direction of traffic and how quickly the information needs to be read.

A multi-sided totem is particularly effective in open areas: beside building corners, at internal intersections, in squares, car parks, at roundabouts, at site entrances or between several buildings.

In these locations, the sign has no single front. It must be legible from several directions while maintaining a consistent form, proportion and presence within the space.

A double-sided or three-sided pylon can repeat the same information across several faces, but it can also display different messages depending on the direction of travel. One side can identify the site, another direct visitors to the entrance, and a further side present tenants, zones or organisational information.

The key is to maintain a logical hierarchy. Having multiple sides should not mean multiplying the content, but tailoring the information to users who see the sign from a particular direction.

With multi-sided pylons, it’s easy to make the mistake of filling every side with too much information. Having more surfaces shouldn’t lead to content, logos and messages being duplicated at random.

Each side should have a clear purpose, be easy to read and contain the right amount of information. A multi-directional sign should help people navigate the space, not create several competing signs.

In some projects, one side of the pylon is dominant, while the others serve an auxiliary purpose. In other cases, all sides are equally important because the sign is located in an area with traffic approaching from all directions.

That is why, at the design stage, it is important to determine which surfaces are the most prominent, where the logo will appear, where directional information will go, and where modules for tenants, services or facility zones will be placed.

A multi-directional monolith should maintain visual consistency regardless of the viewing angle. Typography, proportions, module rhythm, lighting, materials and information layout must form a single system.

A multi-sided pylon is often viewed in motion: by pedestrians, drivers or both. Users see the sign from different angles and distances, and for a limited time.

That is why effectiveness depends on scale, contrast, orientation, the size of the information, and whether the right content appears on the side the user can actually see at that moment.

A multi-sided totem can be illuminated from one, two, three or more sides of the structure. The light can highlight the logo, information panels, the edges of the structure, tenant modules or selected viewing directions.

With signs like these, even illumination and control of the after-dark effect are important. Each side should be easy to read, while the entire structure must still look like one coherent element of the space.

Double-sided, three-sided and multi-sided pylons require a carefully planned design, stable foundations, adequate service access and close attention to detail on every visible edge.

Unlike a single-sided sign, this type of structure is viewed from multiple sides. That is why it is not only the information-bearing faces that matter, but also the corners, joints, the thickness of the structure, its rear and how the form is enclosed.

The most common mistakes when designing multi-sided pylons, double-sided totems and 360° signs stem from failing to analyse viewing directions. Problems arise when every side is treated the same, even though users see them from different distances and angles.

Confusion also arises when each side has a different hierarchy, too much content, inconsistent modules or lighting that breaks up the form. A freestanding multi-sided sign should work as one system, not as several separate boards.
