SIGNATURE PYLONS
ARCHITECTURAL MAIN TOTEMS
WITH A CUSTOM FORM AND MATERIAL

A landmark pylon is designed as the brand’s primary sign in the surrounding space. It can stand in front of a company headquarters, by the forecourt, at a showroom, hotel, clinic, customer service centre, campus, retail showroom or premium property.

Its function differs from that of a directional, roadside, entrance or modular pylon. A landmark totem is not primarily intended to guide traffic or display multiple pieces of information. Its purpose is to create a strong first impression of the brand and emphasise the standing of the location.

An image pylon is more than a surface bearing a logo. It is a sign that can become part of a property’s architecture: its proportions, materials, façade rhythm, entrance area and the way the brand is seen from the outside.

In this category, the priority is not to fit in as much content as possible. What matters more is creating a distinctive, durable and cohesive form that communicates the brand’s quality without an excess of messages.

A prestige pylon makes sense when a site calls for a more distinctive, individual marker than a standard freestanding sign. It is a solution for brands that want to establish a recognisable presence in the space, not just mark a location.

It works well at company headquarters, premium venues, hotels, clinics, showrooms, brand experience centres, campuses, technology facilities, retail showrooms and spaces where first impressions have strategic importance.

Landmark pylons, brand-image totems, brand monoliths and flag signs can be made from aluminium, steel, stainless steel, technical composites, glass, acrylic, stone, architectural concrete, wood, sintered materials, Corten steel, painted panels, three-dimensional letters, milled elements, illuminated edges, illuminated lightboxes or custom solid modules.

The choice of technology depends on the shape of the sign, how the logo is integrated, the nature of the material, the scale of the structure, outdoor conditions, the type of illumination, the desired effect after dark and the level of prestige the sign is intended to convey.

When using non-standard materials, durability, weather resistance, the method of attachment to the supporting structure, how the surface ages, maintenance and whether the material will retain its quality over many years of exposure are especially important.

A statement totem can go beyond the classic vertical structure. It can feature curves, angled cuts, asymmetry, cut-outs, a three-dimensional logo, a contoured shape, a distinctive lighting detail or a structure inspired by the brand’s logo.

However, the aim is not to make the design more complex for its own sake. A custom shape should strengthen the brand’s recognition and character while remaining legible, durable and in harmony with the architecture.

An architectural pylon can be defined not only by its shape, but also by its material. Steel, aluminium, stainless steel, glass, acrylic, composite, stone, architectural concrete, wood, sintered stone, Corten steel, and brushed, milled, painted or illuminated surfaces can all become part of a brand’s recognisability.

In this category, material is more than just a finish for the structure. It can convey prestige, rawness, technology, warmth, minimalism, luxury or the character of a site. That is why the choice of material should reflect the brand, the architecture and the location, rather than being driven by a random visual effect.

On statement pylons, the logo can be part of the structure itself: milled, illuminated, three-dimensional, cut out, recessed into a panel, projecting from the structure or integrated into the sign’s design.

This means the brand’s flagship sign does not look like a standard panel with a logo applied to it. The logo becomes part of the pylon’s architecture, working together with the material, light, proportions and details.

A brand monolith should be tailored to the building’s architecture, the scale of the entrance, the character of the façade, the materials, the surroundings and the way visitors see the site from the outside.

In this category, the sign must not look like an afterthought added once the project is complete. It should enhance the composition of the place and create the impression that the brand identity was planned as an integral part of the space.

A landmark pylon makes an impression before a conversation, before entering reception and before meeting the team. Visitors see the quality of the brand before they even cross the threshold.

A well-designed main totem elevates the perception of the site, organises the forecourt and communicates that the space has been thoughtfully designed—not merely signposted.

A prestigious pylon should not usually display too many messages. A logo, brand name, venue name, symbol, identifying slogan or brief message that reinforces the character of the place is usually enough.

Too much content diminishes the sign’s prestige. A brand-image totem should make an impact through its form, proportions, materials, light and clear identification—not through the amount of information it contains.

Prestige pylons should not look like variations of the same off-the-shelf sign. Every brand has its own geometry, rhythm, colour, material, level of expressiveness and way of functioning in a space.

That is why we design each bespoke freestanding sign to suit the visual identity, the architecture of the site, the type of user and the level of prominence the brand wants to achieve.

A statement pylon sign should stand out, but it does not have to dominate its surroundings. Its impact comes from its proportions, materials, details, lighting and consistency with the brand—not from excessive size or too many effects.

The best statement sign is recognisable, elegant and confident. It strengthens the brand without looking like an arbitrary display.

A prestige totem can feature lighting for the logo, edges, structural lines, cut-outs, dimensional lettering, material details or selected parts of the structure.

Lighting should enhance the way the sign is perceived, not create an arbitrary effect. For brand image pylons, uniformity, light colour temperature, ease of maintenance and how the sign performs after dark are especially important.

Unusual shapes, unconventional materials and an integrated logo require precise structural design, careful material selection, stable installation, resistance to the elements and close attention to detail.

The more bespoke the form, the more important the joints, edges, body thickness, service access, backlighting protection and finish durability become over years of display.

The most common mistakes when designing premium pylons, landmark totems and brand monoliths stem from confusing prestige with size, visual impact or excessive form. A sign can be large, made from expensive materials and still look out of place.

The problem arises when the structure does not reflect the brand, the logo is merely added to the surface, the material does not suit the architecture, the lighting is too aggressive or the form has no connection to its surroundings. A premium pylon should enhance the status of the site, not pretend to be exceptional.
